Build Confidence Alone By Doing These Sports April 26, 2017

For people with self-confidence issues, it can be very difficult to explain to someone else why they cannot simply introduce themselves to a stranger or try something new. In fact, one of the commonest ways for poor self-confidence to manifest is for the individual in question to fade away into the wallpaper. This doesn’t mean that every wallflower at your office party has self-confidence issues; they may simply be a bit shy. But if you really are low on this department, then the best thing is to try to come out of it – on your own.

Visual Reinforcement

As pithy as it sounds, repeating a positive sentence to yourself every morning in front of the mirror can work wonders for your confidence. You have to start with something that you genuinely admire about yourself, for instance, the fact that you wakesurf Hong Kong. If you are strong enough to do a thrilling and exciting sport as that, then there is no reason why some of that high cannot rub off on your day job too. Look into your eyes in the mirror and say in a strong, firm voice, “I’m good at XXX”. Keep repeating that until you can say that to a friend, family member and eventually a stranger without squirming. Remember, practice is the key.

Outside the Comfort Zone

Most people with poor self-confidence find it difficult to come out of their shell because of peer pressure and social opinion. They worry too much about what others will think. One of the best ways to combat this is to take your baby steps when you are alone and on holiday. If you are in a strange place surrounded by strange people, then you do not have to worry about anyone judging what you do. So if wakesurfing is something you have always dreamed of doing, now would be the best time to do it. Worst case scenario, you will totally suck at it but the good news is that no one back home will know. See here for further information regarding wakeboarding lessons.

Change the Company

Sometimes, poor self-confidence is a result of the company you keep. Friends who are very outgoing and flashy can be a bit off-putting, especially if you are also an introvert. Their loudness can make you feel smaller. However, if you are surrounded by friends who are thoughtful and mindful of your insecurities, they will make room for you to grow and blossom while also inspiring you to follow their more vocal footsteps. Try to hang out with friends who help motivate you every day and change your company if they don’t do so.
